A Sacrifice Not In Vain

This weekend is a special one surrounding a special day: Memorial Day. It is a weekend for us to remember the many brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms and liberties. It is a weekend for Americans to show our gratitude to the lives lost defending this great nation and the principles for which we stand.

President George W. Bush once said something that encapsulates this holiday best:

“Their sacrifice was great, but not in vain. All Americans and every free nation on earth can trace their liberty to the white markers of places like Arlington National Cemetery. And may God keep us ever grateful.”

As you enjoy the weekend with your loved ones, be sure to remember what this weekend is truly about. We have so much to be grateful for and celebrate.  Here’s to a wonderful Memorial Day weekend to you!

Investing in Efficiency and Safety

Transportation infrastructure is a crucial component for the future success of our great state of Minnesota and this country as a whole. It has been one of my top priorities since being elected and will remain so. Last week, we celebrated Infrastructure Week to emphasize the critical need to invest in our failing infrastructure throughout the United States.

Investing in infrastructure provides good-paying, long-term jobs and increases the revenue and tax dollars being brought in at both the state and federal levels. It also reduces congestion, improves efficiency and brings numerous other benefits to the American people. Read More

National Police Week

This week is a special time to salute the brave individuals who choose public safety as a career, spending their days and nights patrolling communities across the country, keeping a watchful eye over you and your loved ones, and at times putting themselves in harm’s way. We especially want to highlight and honor the incredible dedication of the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect and serve.

Unfortunately, Minnesota is no stranger to losing officers in the line of duty. In fact, the list of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in our state is far too long. These are mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, friends and members of our community who put their life on the line so that your life, and mine, is protected.

Notes on the AHCA

Last week was an incredibly busy week in Washington, D.C., so this is the first chance to update you on what we did and how I voted.

The passage of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) was the first step to replace the disastrous Obamacare. While there is still much work to be done, this was a huge win to unwind the mandates, taxes and regulations forced on Minnesota families and businesses under the Affordable Care Act, and I was proud to support it.

The AHCA repeals the individual mandate, the employer mandate, the medical device tax and the Medicare tax. It also ends federal funding for Planned Parenthood. Additionally, the AHCA increases options for consumers across the country while allowing for a more open and flexible marketplace centered on the consumer’s, not government’s, choice. And, importantly, it gives control back to the states where it belongs.

There is still much work to be done but I am committed to doing what I was elected to do – rein in spending and reduce government involvement in our daily lives. I look forward to continuing our efforts in Washington to do just that.

Today is Tax Day. A day dreaded by everyone except the government.

Here in Minnesota, we are hit especially hard by our nation’s archaic, complicated and excessive tax code. According to the tax collectors themselves, Minnesotans fall among the top three states whose citizens pay the most taxes per person. And just last week, we found out that Minnesota has the 5th highest tax burden in the country.

Simply put: at nearly 75,000 pages, our tax code is out of control. Studies show that the IRS imposes more than 8.1 billion hours of paperwork on the American people and this year, total tax compliance is expected to top $400 billion. Thankfully, help is on the way. Read More
