About Tom Emmer

Growing up around the family lumber company, Tom Emmer learned first-hand the value of hard work. He attended St. Thomas Military Academy where he learned about faith, leadership in JROTC, and he played lots of hockey. He continued to play hockey while he earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and his Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law. Soon after, Tom married his wife, Jacquie Samuel, and together they are blessed with 7 children - six boys and one girl.

Tom Emmer followed the entrepreneurial spirit and established his own law firm while raising his family, coaching hockey, and serving on the city councils in Independence and Delano. Tom lost his sister to cancer in 2000, but her upbeat attitude about life is something Tom carries with him everyday.

Tom continued his public service in the State legislature from 2004-2008, and ran for Governor in 2010. After the 2010 election cycle, Tom entered the radio business as a conservative radio host on Twin Cities News Talk AM1130, quickly becoming a force for political commentary in the Twin Cities metro area.

As of 2012, the USDA Census data lists more than 5,700 farms operating in the sixth district and accounting for more than nine hundred million dollars of agriculture product.

Notably, the district has diverse interests from the northern and western suburbs to Central Minnesota, and along with the MFBFPAC, a previous endorsement by the US Chamber of Commerce demonstrates Emmer is working to earn support from the entire Sixth District.

"In less than a month Tom was able to launch and set the foundation of a first rate campaign as well as produce a strong fundraising report that draws on a broad network of donors," said State Senator Karin Housley, Emmer's Treasurer.

"I am humbled by the outpouring of support and generosity from across the district, from Lino Lakes to Ramsey to St. Cloud," said Emmer. Strong fundraising numbers demonstrate the high level of support needed to build a campaign primed for the general election. After a successful campaign launch, these fundraising numbers indicate that Emmer's campaign has the momentum needed to carry it to victory.

Delano, MN – Former State Representative Tom Emmer announced today his candidacy for Congress from Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District. He declared his desire to represent the values of everyday people from across the district by bringing Main Street principles to Washington. Emmer is the only candidate thus far to formally declare his candidacy following Congresswoman Michele Bachmann's decision not to seek another term.

"After thorough discussions with my wife Jacquie, my family and my friends, I have decided to enter the race for Congress to serve the people of the 6th Congressional District of Minnesota," Emmer said. "The announcement by Congresswoman Bachmann last week surprised and shocked us all. I want to commend her and her staff on the great work they do on our behalf in the U.S. House of Representatives."

"The decision to run was not made lightly. As we know firsthand, family and friends make all kinds of sacrifices during a campaign," continued Emmer. "But as I look at the direction our country is going and the impact it is having on the daily lives of families in the sixth district, in our state and in our great nation, I have never been more compelled to serve."

"This is going to be a campaign to present a positive vision for the people of the sixth district," added Emmer. "I'm running for Congress to change the culture in Washington and restore Americans' trust in government. I am running to represent our values, our district and most importantly, all of the citizens of Anoka, Forest Lake, St. Cloud, Elk River, Waconia, Delano and every city and town in between that make the sixth district a place that I am proud to call home."

Emmer has announced that State Senator Karin Housley will serve as his campaign treasurer and Michael Scholl will serve as his general consultant. In the coming weeks, Emmer will announce additional members of his campaign team. In the meantime, please visit www.emmerforcongress.com
